The airport – which has been known over time as “El Rompedizo” or “García Morato” – was officially renamed Malaga airport by a Ministerial Order in September 1965.
By Ministerial Order of May 18, 2011, its official name was changed to Malaga-Costa del Sol airport.
The new passenger terminal was inaugurated on 29 January 1968 and was immediately used by both national services, which were served at the civil station, and international services, which were served at the temporary station.
The growing increase in traffic – mainly non-scheduled flights (in 1965 some thirty companies operating in Malaga operated this type of traffic) – meant that a specific terminal had to be built, known as the’Modular station for non-scheduled traffic’.
The new building is identical to the ones built in Palma, Girona, Alicante and Ibiza; it was inaugurated on 30th June 1972.
