The station has been named after the philosopher and essayist María Zambrano since 2007, as it used to be called Málaga-Término. It is located in the district of Cruz de Humilladero, 2 km from the Port of Málaga and 9 km from the Airport of Málaga-Costa del Sol, with which it connects through the Line C-1 of Cercanías.

The current station as a whole is the result of the works carried out between 2005 and 2007 to carry a high-speed line to the capital of the Costa del Sol, which culminated in the opening of the Antequera-Málaga section of the Córdoba-Málaga L.A.V. on 23 December 2007.5 It is built on the site of the old historic station of Málaga.

On 16 June 2017, a link was opened with the El Perchel metro station to facilitate mobility between the station, the bus station, the shopping centre and the underground platforms serving the local lines.
